List Philosophy
The City of Abilene wants to provide the citizens of Abilene with the most timely and accurate City-related information available in the manner in which our citizens find to be the most useful. To meet that objective electronically, we provide information delivery via postings to this website, and also in the form of email sent to the subscribers of one or more of our announcement style mailing lists.
We recognize that email can be abused. Although "junk mail" or "spam" has been defined in a number of ways, we believe the key to defining the nature of mailings has more to do with whether or not the recipient actually requested the mailings than the email's content. We want to be sure that the recipients of our mailings have verifiably asked for the information we send to them.
Our mailing lists are "double opt-in" style lists, meaning:
- You must initiate the sign-up process to subscribe, and
- You must confirm your intent to subscribe to a list before you will receive any mailings from us.
The one-time sign-up process is surprisingly easy to accomplish. The method that we use establishes that you've actually requested mailings from us, and it protects your City of Abilene from accusations of "spamming."
If you'd like to receive mailings from the City, you can subscribe at any time to any (or all) of the lists you choose below. You can easily unsubscribe at any time in a matter of minutes.
Your email address is only used by authorized City employees in order to facilitate the delivery of mailings for the lists to which you're subscribed. We do not share your address with anyone outside of the City of Abilene.
Our mailing lists are "Announcement" style lists, meaning that mailings to subscribers are only sent by the list owner (or a designated alternate). Subscribers cannot post to a list, and as a subscriber, you will not receive email from other subscribers.
How to Subscribe
To subscribe to any list, simply send an empty email (no subject line required) to
< list name >-subscribe@ci.abilene.tx.us
(e.g., crimereport-subscribe@ci.abilene.tx.us).
(e.g., crimereport-subscribe@ci.abilene.tx.us).
Clicking one of the "Subscribe" links provided below will launch a new message in your email client (such as Outlook). All you need to do is send the message.
Next, you'll receive an email asking you to confirm that you'd like to subscribe to the list. On that message, click Reply, and then Send. Finally, you'll receive an email welcoming you to the list. That's it!
How to Unsubscribe
Unsubscribing is just as easy as subscribing. Should you decide that you want to stop receiving messages from a City of Abilene list to which you're subscribed, you can easily cancel the subscription at any time. You can unsubscribe from any list simply by sending an empty email (no subject line required) to
< list name >-unsubscribe@ci.abilene.tx.us
(e.g., crimereport-unsubscribe@ci.abilene.tx.us).
(e.g., crimereport-unsubscribe@ci.abilene.tx.us).
Clicking one of the "Unsubscribe" links provided below will launch a new message in your email client (such as Outlook) to help facilitate the unsubscribe process. All you need to do is send the message.
Next, you'll receive an email asking you to confirm that you'd like to unsubscribe from the list. On that message, click Reply, and then Send.
Finally, you'll receive an email confirming that you've been removed from the list. You'll no longer receive mailings for that list.
Note that you can use these same procedures to subscribe or unsubscribe from any or all of the mailing lists offered by the City. Each list is independently operated, so you will need a separate subscription (or termination of subscription) for any given list.
If You Use Web Mail
If you use any form of web mail (such as the Outlook Web Access, Yahoo, Hotmail, etc.), you'll need to copy the email addresses beside the Subscribe or Unsubscribe links below. Paste into the To: field of a new email message.
