The Planning Division manages long range and current planning issues facing the community. The Department staff is called upon to work in several different areas of planning including land use planning, transportation planning, historic preservation, and the development of customized plans to assist residents in their efforts of neighborhood revitalization. Staff has also been working to create new standards for community enhancement, such as improving sidewalks, landscaping, sign clutter, and the community’s general appearance.
This Division enforces the City's adopted building codes and other standards for construction. Specially qualified personnel work with contractors before, during, and after construction to ensure the safety and quality of buildings.
This Division encompasses Code Compliance & Environmental Health. It was created in 2005 in order to provide more convenient and timely service to the public, as well as promote measures which modify or control factors that cause illness, injury, or discomfort to people
The Office of Neighborhood Services is responsible for administering two federal grants: the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and the Home Investment Partnerships grant (HOME), and assists in developing neighborhood plans.
The Abilene Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) is the regional transportation planning agency responsible for working with local, state, and federal agencies along with many community partners, transportation providers, and citizens. The goal is to accomplish regional planning under one voice, which will provide the greatest benefit while at the same time reflecting the concerns of the communities within the study area.
