Animals at the shelter maybe for adoption if the stray reclaim time has lapsed or the animal was owner-surrendered. Check with the Shelter to see if the animal is available for adoption and please read our Adoption Policy.
To Adopt an Animal
The Abilene Animal Shelter is a shelter for lost, homeless, and unwanted pets. Strays are picked up by field officers and citizens, unwanted animals can be surrendered by their owners, and very often animals are dumped in areas around town and at the shelter. Our goal with these animals is to provide a clean, sanitary place, out of the weather; provide a good wholesome meal, and give the animal a chance at reuniting with their owner, a new adopter or be placed with a rescue group.
Abilene Animal Services welcomes your 501(c)(3) group and depends on your partnership to help us save the lives of countless homeless pets. If you would like to be added to our transfer list, send your organization's 501(c)(3) and a list of authorized transporters to firstname.lastname@example.org
If accordance with Chapter 828 and Chapter 826 of the Texas Health and Safety Code, all animals must be spayed or neutered and vaccinated for rabies. A transfer agreement stating this must be signed at the time the animal is picked up, and proof of sterilization and rabies verification must be presented to update our records.
- A valid government issued ID is required at the time the animal is picked up
- Abilene Animal Services' policy is to honor adoptions over any transfer to adoption partners
- Abilene Animal Service's staff reserves the right to choose which animals are available for transfer
Our Shelter will take any and all animals that are brought to us from the City Limits of Abilene. If you live outside the City Limits you should contact the shelter in your community or a rescue group that may take your animal in.
Hours for Animal Impoundment:
Monday - Friday
10:30 AM - 5:00 PM
11:00 AM - 1:00 PM
Animal Services has surveillance cameras to prosecute violators that dump animals at the shelter outside of the assigned times for Impoundment. Animal Dumping is a Class B Misdemeanor punishable with a fine of up to $2000 and imprisonment of up to 180 Days.
This division offers owner-requested animal euthanasia at the charge of $20.00 per animal. This process is done by lethal injection. The owners can not be with the animal while the procedure is being done. You may take the animal back home with you for burial or we offer disposal at no fee and Private Cremations for a fee.
Pet Cremation Services
Private and communal pet cremations are offered, the cost of these services is determined by the weight of the animal. These services allow the pet owner to get ashes back for placement in an urn or other appropriate receptacle.
Urns are available at an additional cost in a variety of sizes, styles, shapes, and colors. We have a local artist that makes hand made ceramic urns, or you can choose from several wooden box styles that we have available at the shelter.
