Programs for Kids

This page lists the regularly scheduled programs for children. Please check the Events Calendar for special programs. Programs are planned with certain age groups in mind and reflect the developmental ages indicated. For this purpose, we ask that you check the recommended age level prior to attending a program. If you have any questions about the programs, please call the children's department at (325) 676-6067.

Daycare Storytime: call to make arrangements
Storytime is also offered to the daycares of Abilene. Daycare Storytime provides services to children who, because their parents work during the day, would otherwise not benefit from the Library's services. Daycares arrange regular storytimes that fit into their schedules. Often, staff uses specific themes to fit the daycare's educational unit.

Out & About: call to make arrangements
To bring storytime to kids who can not get to the library. Storytellers make regular visits to childcare facilities. Call to set up a time.

Storytelling Kits: for childcare workers, state-licensed childcare providers, and teachers only
To bring services to the children in daycare, the Library has 66 storytelling kits. Each kit contains 4-5 books on a topic along with physical props, enabling the daycare worker to conduct a quality storytime in their facility. The kits also include wooden puzzles, fingerplays, activities, and a bibliography. Storytelling Kits loan to teachers, childcare workers, and state-licensed childcare providers only. Check with the Librarian to see if you are eligible.

Teacher Resources
The Children's Department's reference collection contains a growing number of resource books for early-childhood teachers, including pattern books, fingerplays and activity ideas.

Library Tours
Library tours are available for any group wishing to obtain a better understanding of the Library's services. Tour groups include public and private school classes, Scout troops, childcare workers, and Children's Literature classes from the universities. General tours cover the entire Library. Special tours are also arranged to cover a specific topic or area.

In-School Registration
Coordinating with the schools, the Circulation and Children's Departments attend PTA meetings where parents and children can register for Library cards.
