What is YAC?

The Youth Advisory Council (YAC) of Abilene is a board of about 25 members that are interested in learning about municipal government, serving their community and becoming leaders among their peers.

YAC brings a valuable youth perspective to the City Council and to other elected leaders in our community.

Members are middle and high school students from the Abilene Independent School District, Wylie Independent School District, and Eula Independent School District.

Members must be at least 12 years of age but not older than 19. Council members must be in good standing with their respective school and have an 80.0 grade point average.

Please view the City Ordinance (updated September 2006) regarding YAC here.

Mission Statement:

A YAC is a group of young people working toward the common purpose of developing their individual leadership skills to strengthen their communities through volunteer service and increased communication with municipal leaders.

How to become a member?

Members are selected by counselors and principals at their respective schools and confirmed by the City Council.

Meetings

YAC meets at least once a month on Mondays at 7:00 p.m.

There are Leadership Days throughout the school year. Leadership Days consist of touring services, buildings, businesses, museums, universities, etc. from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on a weekday.
