Services

Concrete Repairs:
Concrete maintenance personnel are responsible for some curb and gutter repair, bridge repair, and concrete street and alley maintenance. Crews assigned to this activity also assist during major rehabilitative projects.
Asphalt Repairs:
Asphalt maintenance functions such as partial and full depth patching, pothole repair, and surface seals are performed by this activity. Additionally, personnel assigned to asphalt repair also assist in larger projects such as street rehabilitation and reconstruction projects.
Crack Sealing:
Repairs consist of using a polymer modified sealant intended to seal cracks in asphalt to prevent moisture from seeping below the surface level and into the base. Infiltration of water into the base level ultimatly leads to a debilitated base structure. This preventive measure is normally applied during the spring and fall season.
Seal Coating:
This is not a permanent maintenance process. The service life of seal coats on average is 5 to 7 years depending upon traffic volumes, weather, and construction techniques, etc. Seal coats are capable of preventing and correcting a variety of maintenance problems, such as small cracks, ravelling, and flushing. Seal coats can seal existing pavements against the penetration of air and/or water, thus reducing pavement oxidation, and can enrich a dry and/or ravelled surface. Seal coats can also provide or improve skid resistance qualities of a pavement surface as well as arrest fatigue block deterioration. Favorable weather conditions are important because inclement weather (cold, wet), particularly in combination with high-volume traffic, can be detrimental to seal coat construction and performance.
Gravel Maintenance:
Two crews are tasked with the maintenance of all public gravel streets and alleys. Country-type roads within the city limits as well as Lake Fort Phantom Hill gravel roads are also maintained.
Street Rehabilitation:
This activity performs asphalt overlay and street reconstruction.
Street Sweeping:
The Street Services Division uses a zone concept to ensure all roads within the city limits receive a fair amount of coverage. Sweeper operators rotate through 42 zones and approximately over 1,600 standard lane miles of roads within the city. The amount of debris in each zone dictates the speed at which and operator is able to complete a zone; therefore it is quite difficult to calculated exactly when a street sweeper will be in your neighborhood. You may monitor the location of the street sweeping crew by using the city's Education/Government Channel available on Suddenlink Cable 7 or Broadcast Channel 7 KXN-TV. Three street sweepers are presently in operation on a full time basis. Although low hanging tree limbs and accumulations of silt and debris in gutters are a constant challenge to the program; arterial and collector streets are swept two times a month.
