Abilene Fire Department

Support Services

Fire Support Services is under the direction of an Assistant Chief appointed by the Fire Chief. This division plans and directs the department's Public Education Office, Logistics and Fleet Maintenance, and Technical Services.

Public Education

The Public Education Office provides safety education programs and presentations for all Abilenians, from preschoolers to senior citizens. The department's Public Education Officers coordinate fire safety programs conducted within the public school system, such as the Fire Safety House, M.I.M.E.S. Fire Camp, J. D. the robot, and more. Prevention personnel provide training or informational classes upon request for Abilene businesses or citizen groups. The department also provides a variety of printed materials covering a wide range of fire safety and prevention topics, printed in both English and Spanish. Please call (325) 676-6682 for more information on fire safety education.

Logistics and Fleet Services

The Logistics Division consolidates the functions of fixed facility and motor fleet maintenance, equipment and supply allocation in addition to procurement and research to facilitate efficient and effective utilization of fire department resources. The goal of this division is to provide quality equipment, services and facilities to the firefighters of the Abilene Fire Department in a controlled, expedient manner.

The division administers the inventory and supply distribution network to meet the daily and mission critical needs of the Abilene Fire Department including everything from fire engines and fire hoses to office and janitorial supplies, station furnishings, fire tools and equipment, yard maintenance equipment, emergency medical supplies, fitness equipment, uniforms and protective clothing.

The division works with Abilene’s own highly trained Emergency Vehicle Technicians, station officers, and station firefighters and outside contractors to maintain the fire departments’ fleet of vehicles. This includes preventative maintenance, repairs, and refurbishment.

Technical Services

The Technical Services Division was created to recommend, implement, and maintain electronic technology-based devices and systems used by the Department. This includes the Fire Department interests in the new 800 MHz M/A-Com radio system, Intergraph Computer-Aided Dispatching (CAD) system, the Intergraph I/Mobile (mobile computer) communications system, fire station alerting, the mobile communications/command vehicle, atmospheric monitoring (hazardous material detection) equipment, and much more.

This division works closely with other City and area agencies to insure the continual flow of information necessary for everyday operation as well as emergency response to major disasters and incidents. This can mean supporting communications for responders in the local area or providing a complete mobile dispatching center for distant jurisdictions whose systems have been damaged by hurricane, tornado, or wildfire.

Along with the members of the Public Education Division, Technical Services provides Public Information Officers (PIO) for working with the media and through other means to relay pertinent information of Fire Department events and emergency responses to the public.

The goal of the Technical Services division is to provide accurate, timely information to City leaders, responders, and the general public so they can make informed decisions about protecting themselves and others.
