Fire Organizational Development
Organizational Development is a division of Community & Support Services. The Organizational Development Division Chief oversees all functions within the division and also serves as an Emergency Management liaison for the fire department.
Organizational Development encompasses training, recruitment, hiring, promotions, fitness, and safety.
The three branches under Organizational Development are Training, Personnel Development and Public Education
Training Division
The Training Division has one captain, two lieutenants, and two firefighters. Their responsibility is to assist department members in maintaining an efficient level of knowledge and skills in multiple fields. These include, but are not limited to, structural firefighting, many aspects of rescue, safety, emergency medical procedures, and hazardous material incidents. The medical aspect of training covers areas from simple first-aid to complicated advanced life support at the paramedic level.
Personnel Development
The Personnel Development Division consists of one captain. This job entails reviewing department policy to ensure consistency in all areas and to maintain our high standards. Personnel Development assists in monitoring promotions, hiring, recruitment, fitness and safety. The position also monitors injury and accident reports looking for ways to improve safety.
Public Education
The Public Education Office provides safety education programs and presentations for all Abilenians, from preschoolers to senior citizens. The department's Public Education Officers coordinate fire safety programs conducted within the public school system, such as the Fire Safety House, M.I.M.E.S. Fire Camp, J. D. the robot, and more. Public Education personnel can sometimes provide training or informational classes upon request for Abilene businesses or citizen groups. The department also provides a variety of printed materials covering a wide range of fire safety and prevention topics, printed in both English and Spanish.
