What We Do
AUTOMOTIVE/TRUCK/HEAVY EQUIPMENT REPAIRS AND MAINTENANCE
The City owns over 700 total units of equipment. The Fleet Maintenance Division has a total of 11 mechanics capable of performing quality repairs on a variety of equipment including bulldozers, motorgraders, draglines, high-tech police cars, mowers, pickups, Dump Trucks, Refuse Trucks, Water Trucks, backhoes, earth scrapers, sedans, motorcycles, crack-sealers, brush chippers, tractors, SUV's, Sewer Trucks, etc. No private business in Abilene furnishes such a wide variety of mechanical skills.
FUEL AND OIL INVENTORY REPORTING, UNDERGROUND TANK MAINTENANCE
The Division is responsible for maintaining fuel and oil inventory, underground fuel tanks, pumps for fuel and oil, tanks for new oil and waste oil, and an Automated Fuel Dispensing System. The Fuel Inventory function requires us to keep adequate fuel and lubricant inventory for all the City's vehicles and equipment; the inventory is here at the yard, on our mobile fuel truck, at the Airport and at the Rose Park Maintenance Facility. We further maintain records of which vehicles are fueled, with the gallons (or quarts) pumped and the user's employee number. Efforts are made always to comply with the Texas Natural Resources Conservation Commission (TNRCC) requirements and procedures.
PARTS WAREHOUSE
This store provides parts service to mechanics and to vehicle users from various divisions. The workers in this capacity are required to have a thorough knowledge and experience in acquiring critical items for the wide variety of vehicles/equipment which the City owns. Also acts as service writers and purchasing agents for the division, and make supply runs and handle outside repair items, and monitor parts inventory.
SAFETY ADHERENCE
The Shop's safety program encompasses a comprehensive fire extinguisher program for the facilities and vehicles, first aid kits, workplace safety training, First Aid/CPR, spills and stormwater runoff, and equipment and vehicle safety.
CAR/TRUCK WASH
This self-service facility is able to accommodate medium size trucks, pickups, and vehicles.
PM (PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE) PROGRAM
At least twice a year, all vehicles (except police cars) are rotated in the Shop for a comprehensive checkup, better known as a PM-B. Wear parts (such as brake pads and shoes, suspension parts, shocks, wiper blades) are inspected, and attention is paid to all fluid levels and filters. Also, the exhaust system is examined, the fuel system, cooling system, transmission, cab, PTO's, hydraulic pumps, air system (if equipped), the body, electrical system, belts, battery, clutch (if equipped), drive shafts, tires, air conditioning, etc. The purpose of this program is to prevent more costly breakdowns and untimely repairs and to detect deeper mechanical concerns that can be repaired later depending on the level of criticality. Also, PM's are performed in the field on large, heavy equipment (such as earth-moving equipment) by our Field Service Mechanic, and in the Service Station (PM-A's and PM-T's, which are lube-oil-filter services, and Transmission services, respectively).
