Downtown Abilene
Customer Parking Program
Objective:
To encourage customers to conduct business or shop downtown without feeling restricted by posted time limit signs, the City of Abilene has initiated a Customer Parking Program.
The program features the use of an “extended business stamp,” available for sale to all business ownersin the TIF District. The stamp offers the downtown businesses the ability to assist their customers in making the most of their downtown visit without feeling they must hurry back to their car to avoid a parking citation.
How It Works:
If a customer receives a 1st offense overtime parking citation while downtown, they may return to the business they were visiting and present the citation to a business employee. The business employee then applies a stamp to it, allowing the customer to be relieved from paying the citation. (The stamp may only be used for “9004” violations i.e. 1st offense overtime parking.) Businesses should remind the customer to mail or deliver the citation to the Municipal Court Office within the ten-day appearance period.
The stamps may be purchased by the sheet with ten per sheet for $10 in the City’s Accounting Office in City Hall. Each business owner buying the stamps must agree to use stamps for customers only and document the citation number to which the stamp was affixed. When the business owner needs additional stamps, they must return the used sheet in order to purchase a new stamp sheet. This allows the Municipal Court employees to verify that stamps are not being issued to downtown employees. If a business is found to issue stamps to employees, they may forfeit their right to purchase future stamps.
