Meeting Minutes Thursday, April 3, 2008
The April 2008 meeting of the Abilene Downtown Association was called to order at 8:35 a.m. at Bogie’s Downtown by ADA President Dennis Miller (Abilene Public Library).
Dennis called for a review of the minutes from the March meeting. Bill Minter (Abilene Preservation League) motioned for acceptance; the motion was seconded by Betty Hukill (Paramount Theater); and the motion was carried by a majority vote of the members present.
The Treasurer’s Report was presented by ADA Treasurer Dave Andersen (Andersen-Jackson CPA). The larger amount reflected in receivables is because of dues … all members are requested to pay their dues ASAP. Dave also stated that he needed bills from the Mercantile Awards program; Dennis said he would get with Tom Rigsby (Capt Flynn Advertising) to get the documentation.
Dennis asked if there were any newcomers. Lydia Long (City Council candidate), and Terry Hughes (Hughes Photography) introduced themselves.
Dennis turned the floor over to Jason Groves (First Financial Bank). Further discussion was conducted regarding the Downtown Abilene Dollars Gift Program. Jason presented proofs of the card and window stickers. The launch for the program will be in early May.
Dennis introduced Jim Winward (City of Abilene) who spoke on getting business/property owner cooperation with trimming of trees downtown.
Dennis Miller opened the floor for member announcements …
David Albert (retired physician) is spearheading an effort to get a downtown street festival going this summer. A first meeting was held in March, and the next meeting will be Thursday, April 17 at the T&P Depot.
Dusty Garrison (United Way) announced a human services expo on April 5; and talked about the Day of Action (dawn to dusk) on June 21.
Bill Minter (APL) announced that the AISD bond election is May 10, and encouraged everyone to support Proposition 2, which would create a magnet school at the old Lincoln Middle School campus. The APL Board is endorsing this proposition.
A.C. Alrey (City of Abilene) announced that there was nothing new on the public restrooms downtown. He also said the balance of the TIF money was set to be spent on Cypress Street-scaping and other downtown development. He promoted the Taste of Abilene and the Boy Scouts sporting clays tournament.
Carolyn Cockerell (WCTCB and Cockerell Art Galleries) promoted the Abilene Acting workshop. She also encouraged everyone to participate in the Trash Off on April 5.
Jason Groves (FFB) promoted Business After Hours on April 17.
Dennis adjourned the meeting at 9:20 a.m. The next meeting will be on Thursday, May 1 at Cockerell Galleries.
