Community Services Department



The Community Services Department is responsible for the management and oversight of the Department’s seven Divisions: Parks; Recreation/Senior Citizens; Civic Center; Health; Golf; Library; and, Zoo. These Divisions operate a variety of programs and provide services that impact the quality of life for Abilene’s citizens on a daily basis.

Parks Division performs landscape maintenance and development services within the parks and other City properties, providing varied, safe, attractive and modern places for public recreation. Maxwell Municipal Golf Course is operated through a contractual arrangement with a private sector vendor in order to provide the public with a cost-effective and attractive golfing opportunity.

The Zoo is a 13-acre zoological facility managed through a partnership with the Abilene Zoological Society. The zoo is dedicated to serving the educational and recreational needs of the Abilene community and considers attracting tourists as an important part of its function.

The Recreation/Senior Citizens Division provides opportunities for constructive use of time through a wide variety of recreational and educational activities. This Division provides programs and services for all age groups ranging from children on up through the Senior Citizen population.

Abilene Public Library provides traditional library services, including general reference services, a Spanish language collection, genealogy collections, and children’s services and also offers the community non-traditional services such as Internet access and electronic resources and education.

The Abilene Civic Center and its partner, Civic Abilene, Inc., provides the community with facilities and services that support the community’s cultural, educational, professional, recreational and economic life through the operation of its multi-purpose facilities.

The Health Division operates all of the Abilene-Taylor County Public Health District’s programs and services. These programs and services include nutrition, immunization, vital statistics, dental, nursing, and a wide variety of testing and treatment services that promote the health and well-being of the citizens of both the City of Abilene and Taylor County.
