Sign Permits
Sign Permit Procedures
- Permits will originate in the Building Inspection Department
- All sign permits must be approved by Planning and Zoning prior to issuance.
- Fees are 2% of the value with a $30.00 minimum
- Permits for pole signs must include the following:
- Location of sign at the site, dimensioned setbacks, parkway width, name of adjacent streets, and the distance to the nearest off-site advertising sign on same side of street.
- Details on the footings/piers to support the weight and resist lateral movement of the sign; wind loads are 70 MPH.
- Signs in excess of 20’ in height are required to have engineered drawings to meet additional wind load requirements above the 70 MPH.
- Billboard signs are required to have engineered drawings; due to size and height.
- Permits for wall mounted signs must include a plan view, and elevation accurately dimensioned.
- Time frames for sign permits: Construction must commence within 30 days of sign application filed with City; Complete construction within 45 days. Signs for projects under construction may have extensions to coincide with project completion.
- Exemptions: name and/or address of the occupants of residential units; non-illuminated signs located on private property that are no greater than six square feet in area; non-illuminated signs pertaining to construction on residential property; non-illuminated political signs on private property in residential zones or commercial/office zones; non-illuminated temporary business promotional signs placed in or on windows of structures in commercial/office uses; and non-illuminated community service signs placed in or on windows of structures in commercial/office use.
- Wall signs are exempt from contractor bond requirements but must be permitted.
- Zoning will review the permit application for compliance with all sign regulation requirements. Building Inspections will review permit for applicable building code and electrical code requirements.
- Building Inspections will verify location of pole signs in accordance with the approved permit and inspect for construction to code.
- Building Inspections will inspect electrical of all signs both internal and external
- Zoning will continue to enforce the ordinance for abandoned signs, unlawful signs, and prohibited signs.
- When a permit is received, Building Inspections will check for complete information and then route the applicant to P & Z (similar to regular building permits). Pole signs which must be checked for distance requirements may require a day or two delay.
- A final building inspection is to be made only after electrical if any is approved
