The American Institute for Economic Research provides this inflation/cost of living calculator. You can use it to convert any number of US dollars in any year between 1913 and 1999 to the equivalent dollar amount in any other year. (And you can probably do it quicker than it takes to read the preceding sentence.) The calculations are based on consumer price index values as supplied by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Consumer Price Index Home Page
One of the pages hosted by the US Bureau of Labor Standards, the CPI home page has lots of lists of historical CPIs as well as information on how to use the CPI and how the CPI is calculated.
Economy at a Glance
The Bureau of Labor Standards produces this table of key economic indicators. It includes such commonly referenced values as the CPI and the unemployment rate for each month of the last year.
More than 70 agencies in the United States Federal Government produce statistics of interest to the public. The Federal Interagency Council on Statistical Policy maintains this site to provide easy access to the full range of statistics and information produced by these agencies for public use.
Info Nation is a United Nations site. Once you've selected up to seven countries and up to four data areas, they will display a nicely formatted table of statistical comparisons.

USDA's Agriculture Fact Book, 1998
The 1998 edition of the United States Department of Agriculture's Agriculture Fact Book; binds together a variety of facts, figures, charts, and tables on US agriculture, nutrition, consumers, and trade; rural America; and the USDA itself. Users can consult the fact book to discover information such as what Americans eat and how much they pay for it, what crops are being raised where and how much, the composition and condition of rural America, the structural organization of the USDA, and much more. The Nobel Channel
A very well designed site with lists of prize winners, as well as biographies and lessons for students. The "Nobel's Web World" section has lots of links to useful science and humanities sites as well as to Nobel-related sites. The site requires a number of browser extensions to access some of the fancier features, but most of the information is available to even those with basic browsers.

The Phrase Finder
Calling itself a "phrases thesaurus and searchable database of English phrases and sayings," this site offers information on the origin and meanings of phrases. Although brief, the information is usually more than adequate.
