The American Institute for Economic Research provides this inflation/cost of living calculator. You can use it to convert any number of US dollars in any year between 1913 and 1999 to the equivalent dollar amount in any other year. (And you can probably do it quicker than it takes to read the preceding sentence.) The calculations are based on consumer price index values as supplied by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Consumer Price Index Home Page
One of the pages hosted by the US Bureau of Labor Standards, the CPI home page has lots of lists of historical CPIs as well as information on how to use the CPI and how the CPI is calculated.
Economy at a Glance
The Bureau of Labor Standards produces this table of key economic indicators. It includes such commonly referenced values as the CPI and the unemployment rate for each month of the last year.
More than 70 agencies in the United States Federal Government produce statistics of interest to the public. The Federal Interagency Council on Statistical Policy maintains this site to provide easy access to the full range of statistics and information produced by these agencies for public use.
