Information Services
The Information Services Desk at the Main Library provides information on researching a wide variety of topics, including consumer affairs, financial reports, hobbies, club programs, business information, and student/homework assistance. A vast array of indexes and research materials, including print and electronic products are available to help lead patrons to answers and solutions to their questions and requests. Children's Department
Children will enjoy our variety of storytimes, videos, books, and special programs, and they won't want to miss the Summer Reading Club. Each location has a separate collection of children's materials including picture books, juvenile fiction, juvenile non-fiction and teen fiction. Public computers are also available for use. In addition to the collections, the Children's Department offers a number of programs for young people, and reader's advisory and reference services for both children and adults. Genealogy Department
Unearth the truth about your family's past as you track their voyage to America and their travels around the country. Some of the tools you will use in piecing together the puzzle of your family's history are census indexes, bibliographies, and family histories. Some tenacious "relative detectives" have even traced their family line to the Mayflower. "How-to" manuals assist the beginning genealogist in their research and explain how to document their findings. The collection also includes The Abilene Reporter News (1888-present), Taylor County News (1885-1899), Merkel Mail (1890-1988), Texas Death Index (1903-1973), Texas Birth Index (1903-1976), Big Country Obituary index (1975-present), Taylor County Birth Index (1885-1943), and Taylor County Marriage Records Index (1878-1958). The United States Census from 1790-1850 is also available on microfilm. Providing a chronology of names of local people, business establishments and other places such as churches and schools, the Abilene city directories, dating from 1907, and Abilene telephone books, dating from the early 1920's, offer valuable information to local historians and researchers. South Branch
Located in southwest Abilene, the South Branch Library provides the community with popular reading materials, videos, audio cassettes, word processing computers, and Internet access. The children's collection contains picture books, juvenile fiction, juvenile nonfiction and teen fiction. Spanish Collection
