Entire month of September - "Library Card Signup Month", all locations

It’s the Smartest Card you and your kids can have, and you can get one for free @ your Abilene Public Library! Libraries are among the most effective of all public services, serving more than 2/3 of the population with less than 4 percent of all tax dollars. Nowhere else are books, magazines, the internet, CDs, DVDs and more, freely available to everyone regardless of economic status. And librarians are always on hand to help you with your information needs.  So come by any library location and get your free library card during September.

 

Sept. 2

Family Fun @ your Library: Back to School – South Branch, 6:30 p.m.

It may be the end of summer and the beginning of school, but at the library, we’re thinking about new beginnings, new friends and fun experiences.  We’ll have stories, songs, and crafts at this free program for the whole family.

 

Altered Books – Mockingbird Branch, 6:30 p.m.

Create your own work of art using a discarded book, using glue, beads, buttons, fabric, etc. We are re-using materials to make a new creation such as a journal, a 3-D piece of art, or whatever you can imagine. Sort of recycling items that would have otherwise gone to waste.  Free, for teens, ages 13-19.

Grand opening of Elm Creek Backyard - Abilene Zoo, 9:00 a.m.

The newest exhibit at the Abilene Zoo opens to the public on Saturday, Sept. 4. For more information, www.abilenezoo.org.

 

Sept. 6

Most City of Abilene offices closed for Labor Day

Most City of Abilene offices and community service centers will be closed on Monday, Sept. 6 in observance of the Labor Day holiday with the exception of those providing life safety services such as fire and police protection.

 

Sept. 7

Rainwater Harvesting – Main Library Auditorium, 6:30 p.m.

By popular demand, Melissa Sturdivant with the Taylor County Extension Service will repeat this program on utilizing one of West Texas’ most important natural resources.  The practical result for homeowners is to learn how to collect the rain to water your yard and/or garden while at the same time reducing your water bill.  Free. 

 

Sept. 9

Abilene on the Move day - city-wide, 10:00 a.m. and other times

The Mayor’s Council on Physical Fitness invites citizens to take 10 minutes towards a healthier lifestyle by participating in “Abilene on the Move” day on Friday, Sept. 10, 2010. It is a day for families, individuals, groups, businesses and schools to take part in an activity that gets people moving. For planned activities and other details, click here.

 

ArtWalk @ your Library: – Main Library, 5-7:30 p.m.

The Abilene Geological Society will be displaying nature’s artwork with a showing of ancient or fossil reefs from the sea.  Members of the Society will be on hand to talk about the display and the Society. Don’t forget the library’s own original mural by Abilene artist Debra Warr in the children’s storyroom. Free.

 

Hooked! Crochet Club – Main Library Auditorium, 6:30 p.m.

If you’re ‘hooked’ on crochet and want to swap ideas and patterns with other addicts, the Abilene Public Library is the place to be on the second Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m.  Librarian Ann Mount will host everyone, from beginners to experts as the group shares projects and expertise.  Bring your own yarn and crochet hooks and the group will go over basic stitches, crochet techniques and do different crochet projects together.  Free.

Juicy, crunchy, sweet, delicious apples!  The fall is a great time to celebrate this wonderful fruit, and the entire family is invited to this afternoon program featuring apple stories, games, songs, and crafts.  Free.

Puppies can be a handful, but they’re worth every minute!  Let Malinda Julien from U.S. Tactical K-9 show you how to choose the perfect puppy companion, teach/train him, groom and keep him healthy.    Free.

Hispanic Heritage Month – Mockingbird Branch

In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, the Mockingbird Branch will have a month long display of Hispanic American People, Places and Events on Stamps.  Through the artwork of the simple stamp, we hope to shed new light on the many contributions of Hispanic Americans and Latinos to the exploration, culture, growth and defense of the United States. Free.

“Cover-to-Cover Book Club” – Main Library Auditorium, 7 p.m.

Be a part of this interesting, lively discussion group as they read and enjoy many different genres.  This month, the group will be reading The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield.  One reviewer calls this book “a love letter to reading.”  Everyone is welcome!  Free.

West Texas Book & Music Festival, Abilene Public Library - 202 Cedar Street and Abilene Civic Center, various times

Tween Night @ your Library: Games Unplugged – South Branch, 6:30 p.m.

Gaming fun doesn’t have to be confined to modern technology and gaming consoles.  You can have a ton of fun with many other types of games that require no electricity at all.  If you’re ages 8-15, the South Branch belongs to you for one hour on the third Monday night of the month!  Free.

Juan Bobo and the Pig: a Puppet Show – Mockingbird Branch, 6:30 p.m.

Enjoy an evening of silly fun as puppets bring the Puerto Rican trickster tale, “Juan Bobo and the Pig,” to life at the Mockingbird Branch. Often called “noodlehead stories” or “Jack tales,” the Juan Bobo stories are tales of a foolish boy who never seems to do the right thing. When Juan Bobo is left to care for the family pig while the boy’s mother is at church, the pig becomes rowdy.  So, the boy decides to dress the pig in his mother’s clothes and send it to church. The ensuing story promises to provide great fun and perhaps a moral!  Free.

If you love anime and manga, this club is for you.  Each month, see a brand new anime episode straight from the distributor, listen to J-rock, get the latest news on anime conventions, and the anime news letter. Talk about Cosplay, show off fan art, discuss anime and Manga they enjoy, and do a craft or game relating to Anime or Japanese culture. Free, for ages 12-24.
